    Default XB1/XBO/XBONE Impressions

The Xbox One is a capable and fun machine to play with and on, I think the biggest problem that it has is who is marketing it.

Here's an example of an experience I had, right out of the gate, with the XboxOne. You are told in a tutorial that there is a place for pins, and that place is to the left of the main start screen. They're so sure you need to know this that the hilarious tutorial guy repeats it three times. Ok so, come on out of the tutorial and there's Netflix to the left of the start screen. So...

    "Xbox, go to Netflix."

Nothing. Try again. Nothing. Try again. It goes to settings. Try again. It goes somewhere else.

What's the problem? The problem was me, well, sort of. You see, I was armed with half-knowledge, and that makes me a dangerous user. Here's the answer: Netflix wasn't installed. Those weren't your pins but SUGGESTED pins for you to download. Thus XB1 has no idea what you're looking for. If you had tried to look for content that should have been in Netflix, that would fail too, of course, until you downloaded the actual app. It is something that I'm simultaneously dumb for not figuring out, but also not responsible for messing up, having been mislead.

And that's sort of the rub with the XB1... you have to find the magic correct answer and all will be well. One wrong word, and forget it, that command is not working. Some people have bitched about the difference between Xbox On and Xbox Turn Off. I can't say why it isn't "Xbox Turn On" but I can tell you why it isn't "Xbox Off." Because if my kid walks in the room and says "Mom says to turn the Xbox Off...." Guess what would happen? Yup.

Even though I don't have a cable box, I still ended up being able to tell the XB1 the make and model of my TV and receiver and now, with a few hidden adjustments, I'm able to walk into the room, say "Xbox On" and the entire system turns on. TV, receiver, XB1. Then I can say "Go to Netflix" and it does. Flawlessly.

I love LOVE the controller. The games I've played so far have been fairly fun, but I haven't had too much time to play. See, MS's plan to infiltrate the living room is a sound one (from a purely marketing perspective) and the mission has been accomplished. But in my house the living room is a busy place. Finding time to straight up game there could be difficult. And that's what's so funny about MS's ideas vs. Sony's. I think Sony got the two screen part right... they're trying to enable gamers and gaming in general. MS is trying to enable families to enjoy all media together. The latter idea may be more noble, but it sucks if all you want to do is game on any given Saturday. That said, being able to "snap" live NFL scores during a Netflix chick flick might just be the key to world peace.

    More impressions later...

This morning I'm happier yet with the xbox one.

Forza is amazing. Literally the only problem I have with this game is that there doesn't appear to be a downside to crashing into the sides of cars. The drivatar system is cool... I never feel like I'm racing AI. The segments where you can just walk around your car and find out more about it are truly "car porn," and I'm not even much of a car guy. You can ask my 96 Honda Civic.

My son has been playing and somehow understanding Zoo Tycoon... a good game for a kid his age, that's for sure. It's cute.

I didn't get a chance to play BF4 or the Powerstar Golf yet.

I LOVE that from the fucking store you can see clips that real players uploaded from the game in question. Somebody with a silhouette that looked like fat Darth Vader flailing around almost sold us on Zumba.

I really am using the voice commands more than I imagined I would. My girlfriend or I can turn the thing on, and navigate all the way through to the exact amazon instant video episode we want to watch and start it up without having to dig the controller out of where-ever it is I dropped it last

Yeah I've set aside my harmony remote in favor of Xbox on/Xbox turn off. I can't quite use the TV stuff because I use over the air antenna, so I do use the remote to switch between TV and XboxOne... and that's it. Otherwise, everything is Xbox One. For the amount of stuff I've been hearing MS got wrong, it is amazing how much they appeared to get right.
